Hole number seventeen is the last par five on the back nine. As you stand on the tee box, you will notice that the landing area slopes moderately from right to left so it is important to bias your tee shot to the high side but… be careful as the roadway on the right is out of bounds. We always say that out of bounds is to the right here, and the entire golf course is to the left, so you decide how close you want to land to the right side of the fairway. If you do land center to left, chances are you will be off the fairway in the left rough but that usually isn’t too bad. As you are proceeding down the fairway, you will notice a stone well that is no longer in service. Many years ago, golfers would stop here and draw a quick cup of water before hitting their second shot. Unfortunately, with laws and government oversight what it is today, this well had to be taken out of service.

 

Your second shot will most likely crest the hill and is straight away down the hill the rest of the way. If play permits, take a run to the top of the hill to sight the green. If you got off the tee well, this is a great time to let it fly and make an attempt to roll your ball onto the green to setup for your eagle putt. You will have to clear a very heavy patch of rough that is about 40 yards in front of the green but the risk is worth it. If you didn’t get to the green in two, chances are you will have a crafty third shot to get close to the pin. The sloping in front of the green lends itself well to playing different angles of bump and run, and be careful if you decide to land on the green on the fly as this green slopes from front to back and can be difficult to hold. Miss your shot left or long and you may catch one of the bunkers. Miss right and you will again be in heavy rough.
